CRISPR/Cas system is a powerful new approach for genome editing with many applications in biomedical research. This technology is a cut-and–paste system based on a prokaryotic adaptive immune defense mechanism for the degradation of foreign genetic elements. It has been rapidly adopted by scientists, as it is a cheap and accessible method for many research applications, such as genome engineering, editing, activation of endogenous gene expression or even silencing specific genes.
